Although stereo-lithography (3D printing) has been around for some time it was fairly expensive to create a part, materials were severely limited and the equipment to produce them was in the $100,000 range. Advances in technology have decreased the size and reduced the cost substantially to allow our joint team to specify and purchase a 3D printer by mid-2013.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1770 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor_face-plate_2x.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"Bodine 3D printed Gearmotor face-mount plate\" width=\"500\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor_face-plate_2x.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor_face-plate_2x-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This machine takes modeling input from <strong>SolidWorks<\/strong>\u00a0and creates 3D models as large as 410 cubic inches (about the displacement of a \u201869 Corvette V-8) with a layer resolution of .0039\u201d. Three materials are available for modeling, PLA which is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyesteris, PVA which is Polyvinyl alcohol, and ABS which is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, all these are available in a wide assortment of colors.<\/p>\n<p>We began using this new te<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-base.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"Bodine-3D-printed-gearmotor-base\" width=\"269\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-base.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-base-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/>chnology in our manufacturing operations to create fixtures for assembly that closely fit our products to facilitate elimination of torque reaction during fastener driving, while incorporating mistake proofing features where applicable and feasible. Then we moved on to the creation of ball bearing installation fixtures and seal expanders\u00a0for prototypes and new custom gearmotor designs. Other areas of manufacturing productivity improvements were to design and \u201cprint\u201d fixtures to directly aid in easing product assembly and in process storage of wound armatures.<\/p>\n<p>From using this new machine initially for simple manufacturing fixtures and tools, our engineering and R&amp;D team now manufacture many new parts for custom-built OEM designs and prototypes. <strong>Examples are new motor front-\u00a0and rear end shields, gear housing covers and motor adaptors.<\/strong> Other parts we \u201cprinted\u201d are <strong>custom encoder covers, new terminal-box designs, Hall Effect device holders for our brushless DC motors and a new 24A motor shield<\/strong> with IP-44 lead exit capability.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-endshield.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1723 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-endshield.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"Bodine-3D-printed-gearmotor-endshield\" width=\"396\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-endshield.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bodine-3d-printed-gearmotor-endshield-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a>The photos in this article show some parts that we manufactured in house, as well as one part that was printed by an outside supplier.
