A major original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for AGVs contacted Bodine Electric Company to help develop two new custom gearmotors for their latest AGV. Bodine has since built, tested and shipped over 50,000 gearmotors to this customer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Challenge <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2457 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bodine-gearmotor-agvs-application-insights.jpg\" alt=\"Bodine-Gearmotor-AGVs-Application-Insights\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bodine-gearmotor-agvs-application-insights.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bodine-gearmotor-agvs-application-insights-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The OEM&#8217;s specifications required two gearmotors, one of them had to lift up to 1,000 lbs (with substantial peak loads). The AGV&#8217;s chassis had already been finalized, and left only limited space for the new gearmotors. The gearmotors were required to operate almost continuously for five years, under worst-case environmental conditions, and would be subjected to extreme vibration and shock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Result <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost every part of these new gearmotors was engineered to match the customer&#8217;s extensive list of requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Low-voltage brushless DC motors<\/strong> paired with all-new, highly efficient gearboxes prolong the AGV battery life and minimize downtime<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gearbox<\/strong> designed to simplify the assembly process of the AGV<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custom output shaft assembly<\/strong> designed for extremely heavy loads<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feedback device<\/strong> tracked the position of the drive shaft<\/li>\n<li><strong>1024 PPR encoder<\/strong> provided servo feedback to control the gearmotors<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Military Style&#8221; plug and screw connections<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature sensors<\/strong> monitor gearmotor performance and to prevent overloads<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manual over-ride<\/strong> in the event of a power failure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4600  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/bodine-gearmotor-custom-type-gearmotor-c.jpg\" alt=\"Bodine-gearmotor-custom-type gearmotor\" width=\"283\" height=\"521\" \/>With Bodine&#8217;s help, these sophisticated robotic vehicles have been performing flawlessly all over the world.
