If additional third-party or safety compliance markings (UL\/ CSA\/ CE\/ T\u00dcV\/ VDE) for a &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">thermally protected<\/span>&#8221; motor or gearmotor are requested by an OEM customer, then that additional mark (UL, CSA, or other) can be obtained at additional cost. Submitting a new thermally protected winding and prototype motors to a third-party test lab can cost up to $5000\/ea and take up to eight weeks of additional development time and testing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Design engineers at Bodine Electric Company have access to a <a title=\"Custom Solutions from Bodine.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/CustomSolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">large selection of custom AC motor windings <\/a>that are already tested and UL\/CSA marked for operation with a thermal overload protector \u2013 in those cases, no additional testing time or fees are incurred.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_87\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"339\" height=\"236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87\" class=\"size-full wp-image-87\" title=\"Bodine motor with manual-reset thermal overload protector\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/manual-reset_ovlp_50.jpg\" alt=\"Bodine motor with manual-reset thermal overload protector\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/manual-reset_ovlp_50.jpg 339w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/manual-reset_ovlp_50-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-87\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AC induction motor with manual reset, thermal overload protector (Bodine motor type 34R4BFCI, TEFC)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>All <a title=\"Standard Products from Bodine Electric Company.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/Asp\/ProductMenu.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stock motors and gearmotors<\/a> from Bodine Electric Company carry the &#8220;<a title=\"Bodine UL Files.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/asp\/ul_certifications.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UR&#8221; (UL recognized)<\/a>, CSA, or \u201ccURus\u201d (UL recognized for USA and Canada), and CE mark for &#8220;construction&#8221; only \u2013 the basic safety compliance marks according to UL1004, CSA22.2\/100, or the European \u201cLow Voltage Directive.\u201d These marks assure the user that one does not get electrocuted when powering up an electric motor, and that the motor will not go up in flames or start a fire. Sounds like a good concept!<\/p>\n<p>There are two ways an \u201cautomatic reset\u201d thermal overload protector can be added to an AC induction or brushless DC (BLDC) stator. The OVLP is in series with the stator windings and opens the current in the coils if the winding gets too hot, or, the two leads of the OVLP are brought out of the motor and an external controller interprets the signal to shut off the power to the motor. As mentioned above, additional cost is only incurred when option one is chosen, and when the motor requires testing for third-party recognition for a &#8220;thermally protected&#8221; winding.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_85\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"508\" height=\"404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85\" title=\"Bodine AC motor stator with OVLP\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/bodine_stator-wovlp_09-2009blog_40.jpg\" alt=\"Bodine AC motor stator with OVLP\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/bodine_stator-wovlp_09-2009blog_40.jpg 508w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/bodine_stator-wovlp_09-2009blog_40-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AC motor stator with on-winding thermal overload protector.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If we bring out the OVLP\u2019s leads separately, to interface with a control, then UL testing for thermal protection would be a system issue, that is, it would have to be taken care of by the customer (since the end user or OEM is installing the motor and control system, and additional electronics or a controller are used to turn off the power to the motor, when necessary).<\/p>\n<p>When&nbsp;an OVLP is wired in series with the stator (leads not brought out separately), different UL\/CSA\/IEC design and safety standards apply. And if third-party recognition for that motor or gearmotor with \u201cthermal protection\u201d is required, Bodine Electric or the OEM can submit that winding for testing to all applicable safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>To save our customers development time and money, Bodine Electric submitted and tested several standard (stock) type 34R, 42R, and 48R [AC] windings for \u201cblanket coverage\u201d with UL. These standard windings were tested and approved for use with a specific \u201cauto reset\u201d OVLP. If the winding you require is equipped with the \u201cblanket coverage\u201d protector and conforms to the requirements of the UL Thermal Protection standard, then the custom built (non standard) motor or gearmotor would get a \u201cR23\u201d mark on the motor nameplate &#8212; to identify the UL (UR) coverage for \u201cthermal protection\u201d recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Bodine Electric Company offers <a title=\"Bodine UL Files. Standard Products.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/asp\/ul_certifications.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">basic &#8220;construction recognition&#8221; (UL<\/a>\/CSA or cURus) and \u201cCE\u201d for all standard products, at no additional charge.
