When the load&nbsp;of a PMDC motor increases, the amount of current that the motor draws also increases. Per the performance characteristics of permanent magnet DC (PMDC) motors, an increase in load will cause a decrease in speed, because of the negative correlation between speed and torque (see speed-torque curve below).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pmdc-speed-torque-graph_02-29-2012e_50.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-851\" title=\"Speed\/Torque Graph for Bodine PMDC Motor\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pmdc-speed-torque-graph_02-29-2012e_50.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pmdc-speed-torque-graph_02-29-2012e_50.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.bodine-electric.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pmdc-speed-torque-graph_02-29-2012e_50-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">IR compensation increases the voltage going to the motor, thus compensating for changes in the load, in order to maintain a constant speed at the end-user\u2019s setting.
